BRU Retires

BRU Retires (Posted by Jim Willsher)

For anyone who doesn't frequent the forum, I announced a few weeks ago that Bulk Rename Utility had reached the end of its development lifecyle, and that the current release would be the final release. This news item confirms that statement.

Support will continue to be available for the product until the end of 2008.

Soapbox: Boycott HP!

Soapbox: Boycott HP! (Posted by Jim Willsher)

I'm abusing my position here, knowing that this page gets lots of hits.

My HP nx9420 Laptop died this week. 14 months old, e.g. two months outside warranty. I called HP. They were not the slightest bit interested. No offer to help with the costs, or to help pay for labour if I paid for parts. Nothing. Even if the laptop had been one day out of warranty, they would not be interested.

Do they have any faith in their own brand?

I know of a situation recently with a Panasonic product, which failed eight months outside warranty. Panasonic offered to pay for parts as it was so close outside warranty.

So, stuff you HP. I'll not be buying any of your stuff again, and nor will my colleagues. Not if you can't see beyond yourselves to assist with something which has clearly failed too early.

Very poor show HP.

There is unlikely to be a new release of BRU for a couple of months. I shall periodically upload a beta containing new functionality, but a formal release won't happen for a while.

As many of your know, I've got a lot happening at the moment. Firstly, I'm getting married. Secondly, I'm moving house. Thirdly, my brother has http://www.andiwillsher.co.uk/blog.php going on. So I shall post updates when I can.

Now Available...command line version of BRU!

Now Available...command line version of BRU! (Posted by Jim Willsher)

I'm excited to announce the first release of Bulk Rename Command. This is a command-line version of Bulk Rename Utiltiy, containing much of the power of BRU, but executed from a command-line. This makes it ideally suited to scripted environments, such as scheduled jobs, batch files, login scripts etc.

Not every feature from BRU has been carried forward to BRC but many have, and I hope to migrate more of the functionality in due course.

I will also be developing a full help file to be included within the download - but for the time being you'll just have to rely upon the inbuilt command help.

Comments welcome!

I've started work on a command-line version of BRU. It will be a totally separate product, and will be driven using command-line arguments. It is targetted at the "power users" and the people who have to make repetitive changes to filenames. In other words, it can be included in scripts.

It's unlikely to have the same power as BRU - at least not in the early phases - but it will incorporate many of BRU's features.
