Recursive Renaming

Postby vinny33 » Tue Mar 29, 2005 9:27 pm

I need to have a value increment in teh prefix of each image in each subdirectory. As an example, I have 25 directories that increment starting at 0001. The images within all directories start 0001.tif and end on 9999.tif. I need the ability to choose the starting value of the incremented prefix and have the images be renamed 123_0001.tif to 123_9999.tif for the 0001 directory , 124_0001.tif to 124_9999.tif for the 0002 directory and so on.....

I really like this utility, but I can't figure out how to do what I need. Does anyone have knowledge as to how I can achieve the outcome I desire????

Unfortunately you can't do this in one go, you would need to do it in 25 separate passes. Not ideal, but I've not encountered this scenario before.

The alternative would be to rename the folders from 0001, 0002, 0003 etc. to 123, 124, 125 etc (using an autonumber). Then use the "append foldername" function (box 8, as a prefix) to all the files. Finally, use the autonumber function again to rename all the folders from 123, 124, 125 etc. to 0001, 0002, 0003 etc.

Does this make sense?

The suggestion offered works perfectly. It is not too much of an inconvenience to run it twice. I don't need to have the folders renamed back to their original name, so all I can say is:

THANK YOU!!!

No problem, happy to help!

Although BRU is powerful, sometimes you have to take two passes (or more) to achieve the desired result. But most things can be achieved eventually.
