please help with recursive renaming

I have the following folder setup

parent_folder1
=> child_folder1
====> file99
====> file454
=> child_folder2
====> file12
====> file454
=> child_folder3
====> file124
====> file993
====> file999

Basically I want the files in each of the subfolders be automatically renamed from 1 to infinity.

something like this:
parent_folder1
=> child_folder1
====> file001
====> file002
=> child_folder2
====> file001
====> file002
=> child_folder3
====> file001
====> file002
====> file003

I can do this manually by going to each folder obviously but not really ideal when you're talking about hundreds of folders.

Any tips/suggestions on how this can be done? thanks!
