hijacked file association

Postby xrestassuredx » Thu Aug 03, 2006 5:44 pm

running windows xp pro sp 2. i have an expanding shortcut to "my computer" in my start menu, and whenever i try to open a folder from there, whether by double clicking or by choosing "open" or "explore" from the context menu, it opens with BRU instead of a normal explorer window! the "my computer" icon on the desktop works normally, as do other folder shortcuts in the same location. i cannot find an explanation or association in the file types list that explains this behavior.

(to reproduce the problem, simply drag the "my computer" icon onto the start button.)

No, I can't find the reason either. It's something to do with the Shell Extension file shipped with 2.3.7.1. It's resolved in 2.3.7.2.

New user of BRU 2.3.7.2 on updated Win2000.
Use it at the moment as a regex previewer/commiter. Works great. Thanks!!

Not really sure what problems xrestassuredx had, but I got the following:

After full install of BRU, it became the default action (the bold one in the context menu) for AVI files (did not immediatly find other types where this happened).
{ IGNORE. CANNOT REPLICATE! When AVI opened with right click, BRU start normally. When AVI opened with double click, part of BRU GUI gets mangled (quite interesting, but of course irrelevent since I don't want BRU to open on double click). }

(Why BRU picks AVI's I don't know. Does it somehow try to track Windows' renames? I actually had just renamed a AVI file through Explorer before starting BRU)

Have now reinstalled from ZIP instead, since I found no other way to disable the context menu.
Suggestion: If you have great pains getting the context menu to work, less intrusive ways might be preferable. E.g. drag&drop subdirs into BRU.

Hi,

I really don't understand this. 2.3.7.2 uses the OLD method of handling the context menus, the method whch has been in use for 12 months. Only 2.3.7.1 used the "new" method, which seemed flawed. So 2.3.7.2 shoul;d have given no issues at all.

In your Bulk Rename Utility progrma folder, please can you list all items you have in there.

Hi again
I rebooted and re-installed the full setup.

I take back what I said about the the difference between double and right clicking. That seems to have been a one time thing.

On the other hand AVI's are still openened by BRU, as well as MPG's. Not any other types that I can find.
On my computer these two types actually have something in common, which is that the icon is missing (some conflict between media players I believe), although file associations as such are just fine (i.e. before I installed BRU).
Does BRU rely on icons or other sys info that is kept in similar place? The problem might then be fixed with a bit of defensive programming.

These BRU's files at the moment.

Well...not entirely.

The installer adds a registry entry to the "*" key, to allow the Bulk Rename Here feature to work on all files. It could have the side-effect that you are seeing, though I don't see the same effect here with my own unregistered filetypes.

To be honest, the Bulk Rename Here feature causes the most hassles, I'm wondering whether to ditch it.

To be clear, my AVI and MPG types are not unregistered, they have somehow become "semi-registered". That is, without BRU they open just fine with their associated app, even though the icon is missing.

Some method of quickly pointing BRU to a subdir is necessary, but personally I'd like to see e.g. drag&drop instead of taking up space in the context menu.

Update: ICO files also get opened by BRU by default on my computer. So in both cases there seems to be some connection to icons. Weird.

FYI I could also reproduce xrestassuredx's problem. I wonder if that as well can be linked to above on some deep level.

I think it's down to the "*" registry entry (which allows Bulk Rename Here on any file). I think I'll remove that for the next release, allowing on the BRU function on folders.
