Change File Type

Is it possible to change a microsoft word document or docx file to a .txt file?

I tried to do this by changing the extension to .txt, but when I opened the file the content was unreadable.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Changing the file extension does NOT change the file itself, only its name.
To change the file type, open the DOC file in Word, and then use Save As and select Plain text as the file type. It will then be saved as text with a TXT extension.
