Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.2 for Windows 98 SE Startup Error

Postby Capman21 » Mon Feb 12, 2007 3:18 pm

I just updated to Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.0 for Windows 98 SE and the upgrade seemed to go fine. It opened the standard view the first time. When I attempted to start it today, it produces an error message Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error. The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

I reran the installation program and it did the same thing. The initial startup from the install was ok. The following times failed.

Is there any links to the prior version? That seemed to work fine.

Hi Capman,

I have saved most versions dating back to 2.2.1.8 at my harddisk.
The problem is, I don't know since when Jim has split the versions into 98/2k/XP etc.
As I work with XP I wasn't interested at all in the 98 versions, sorry.

Jim, as I know you do not keep old versions you may provide the info about the version split, so I could send one of the older zips to Capman?

I'm in the process of trying to install a Windows 98 system so that I can try to recreate the error. I seriosuly didn't think anyone used Windows 98 any more (it's almost an antique) so I don't have access to Win98. I'll see if I can find an old disc somewhere, and try to get 98 running.

I installed Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.2 for Windows 98 SE

Postby Capman21 » Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:27 pm

The message body had a typo and said Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.0 for Windows 98 SE.

Is there a link where I can download Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.1 for Windows 98 SE? I didn't seem to have any issues with that version. I upgraded to Bulk Rename Utility 2.5.0.2 for Windows 98 SE and the problem started when I attempted to start it again.

Thanks

Hi, please could you try the new version (2.5.0.3) on the website.

It appears that Windows 98 (bless it) creates invalid timestamps for the "Created on", "Modified on" etc entries for My Computer, Control Panel etc.

Only Windows 98 :-)

Anyway, I'm now trapping this exception.

Great news, thanks!

I've now managed to get a Windows 98 environment installed (I use Virtual Server to host lots of different copies of Windows) so hopefully this won't happen again.

I have to say though, I do frequently consider dropping support for '98, so it might happens at some stage. But not just yet :-)

OT: What Is Virtual Server?

Postby Capman21 » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:12 pm

I was wondering what Virtual Server is and where can I learn more about it? It sounds very interesting if it it's not too expensive. Currently I use a multiboot manager called BootIT NG from TeraByte Unlimited to boot different operating systems.

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

I have to allocate separate partitions for each OS I wish to boot and a menu screen is presented at boot time allowing me to choose which I want to use. The software also has the ability to do nondestructive partitioning work as well as imaging of partitions for backup and copying purposes.

I have an image setup for Windows XP Pro SP2, but I have alot of software installed on my primary Windows 98 SE image, so I use that the majority of the time. My second Windows 98 SE image was created to isolate PC games from the original system. My PC is pretty old by modern standards and it barely huffs and puffs along on the Windows XP Pro SP2 image. The processor is an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz installed in an Asus A7M266 motherboard with 512 MB memory. I am anticipating upgrading in the near future, but there is always some new chip just over the horizon that makes waiting sound worthwhile. The Penryn core sounds like it's worth holding off a few more months to get.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Both Virtual Server 2005 and Virtual PC 2004 are from Microsoft, and they are both free downloads. They are excellent. I use Virtual Server 2005 and I have about a dozen different copies of Windows - 98, ME, XP, 2003 etc - all available to me. It makes life very easy!
