Rename folder deletes the files in the folder

Postby sparkybird47 » Sun Dec 10, 2017 12:06 pm

Hi, Love the programme for bulk changing of names of files, eg adding prefix.
I am now trying to change the name of folders eg. Hus 370100 Dogs & Cats that has 10 files in it, so I select the folder, remove the first 11 digits new name Dogs & Cats. Click on rename.
When I open the new named folder, it is empty, files have been deleted.
What am I not doing correctly?

Unable to confirm.

When I open the new named folder

How are you opening the folder?
Windows Explorer or similar?
Or did you double-click on the newly named folder name?

If the latter, note that the BRU does not "refresh" the director listing or the pointed to (but now non-existant) "old directory name".
So by double-clicking on the newly named folder name, it is actually displaying the old directory, which is no longer there, so in BRU it displays as "empty".

If you open in Windows Explorer, your files should be there.
If they are not, something else is going on.

Thank you for the reply.

How I use BRU.
I open BRU.
locate my files from the left hand panel. say I have 10 folders in a temp folder.
click on temp.
the folders I want to rename appear in BRU
I select the 10 folders - they turn blue.
go to "remove" - and remove what I don't want.
new and correct name is shown
Click on rename.
I then open windows explorer go to the folder where I saved the new named folder.
Double click on the new name and am told "this folder is empty"
I have done malaware and virus checks - none found.
I have BRU on my other desktop so tried on it as well, same result.

Hi,
I just saw that someone in a forum said you could do rename from right mouse click in explorer, so I tried this and it worked.
I right mouse clicked on "temp" in windows explorer, and clicked on "bulk rename here"
BRU opens with the 10 folders in the work area.
I highlighted the 10 files - turned blue.
renamed using option 5
clicked on rename.
went back to windows explorer and opened a new named file. and all the files are now there.

I WILL USE THIS METHORD FROM NOW ON, AS THIS WORKS BEAUTIFULLY.

THANK YOU

go to "remove" - and remove what I don't want.

That is, Remove (5), on BRU's renaming options?

I then open windows explorer go to the folder where I saved the new named folder.
Double click on the new name and am told "this folder is empty"

Why would Windows Explorer report "this folder is empty" instead of simply opening the folder, be it empty or otherwise?

What OS are you running?

you could do rename from right mouse click in explorer

So using the right-click context-menu allowed things to work as expected.
Where using the "file picker" (directory tree) within BRU itself causes data loss for you?

That is correct.
The right mouse click option in windows explorer allowed things to work correctly, but loading in using the "file picker" within BRU caused data loss.
I am using Windows 10 on both PC's.
