If Old Names Match, Make New Names Match

Postby jarhtmd » Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:46 pm

Let’s say that I have a “main” folder from which I have COPIED files to subfolder to subfolder (or even to subsubfolder). That is, the same filename appears more than once (consecutively) in BRU's old Name column. I want to rename (actually, autonumber) all the files such that the matching filenames are still matching after renaming. Folder1/FileA= File001, Folder2/FileA = File001, Folder1/FileB= File002, Folder2/FileB = File002, etc in all (selected) folders/subfolders. I'm assuming (but what do I know?) that the order shown is the order of the renaming, in which case it seems that comparing "last-old-filename vs this-old-filename" would work.

I don’t think this is possible . . . but, again, what do I know? This does not happen when Folders, Files and Subfolders are all checked in Selection(12).

This would be useful to me because, after my long tedious initial editing sessions, I re-sequenced the remaining of the 5000+ digital images from a recent photo trip. Then as I selected out (copied) the “top quality” images to other folders/subfolders, I discovered that I had not been severe enough with my initial editing. This renaming option would surely save me a lot of work.

BRU does rename in the order shown on the screen. If you can get them in the right order, and utilise the "break at..." part of the autonumber, then you can probably do it that way.

Again, I think I’ve done a poor job describing my problem. I don’t want to reset the numbering. I want to repeat the number if the old name repeats & continue the numbering sequence when/if the old name changes. I guess it boils down to needing a “file” box in Numbering(10) to work similar to, yet different from, the “folder” box. It would CONTINUE (not break/restart) the numbering sequence on a filename change (repeating the same number when there is no change).

Note that not all files are in all folders.

FileA in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File001 . . . only in Folder1
FileB in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File002 . . . only in Folder1
FileC in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File003 . . . only in Folder1
FileD in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File004 . . . only in Folder1
FileE in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File005 . . . also in Folder2 & Folder3
FileF in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File006 . . . also in Folder3
FileG in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File007 . . . also in Folder2 & Folder3
FileH in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File008 . . . only in Folder1
FileJ in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File009 . . . only in Folder1
FileK in Folder1 . . . to be renamed File010 . . . only in Folder1

FileE in Folder2 . . . to be renamed File005
FileG in Folder2 . . . to be renamed File007

FileE in Folder3 . . . to be renamed File005
FileF in Folder3 . . . to be renamed File006
FileG in Folder3 . . . to be renamed File007

Here are my results, with “folder” checked:
FileA in Folder1 . . . wanted File001 . . . got File001
FileB in Folder1 . . . wanted File002 . . . got File002
FileC in Folder1 . . . wanted File003 . . . got File003
FileD in Folder1 . . . wanted File004 . . . got File004

FileE in Folder1 . . . wanted File005 . . . got File001
FileE in Folder2 . . . wanted File005 . . . got File001
FileE in Folder3 . . . wanted File005 . . . got File001

FileF in Folder1 . . . wanted File006 . . . got File001
FileF in Folder3 . . . wanted File006 . . . got File001

FileG in Folder1 . . . wanted File007 . . . got File001
FileG in Folder2 . . . wanted File007 . . . got File001
FileG in Folder3 . . . wanted File007 . . . got File001
FileH in Folder1 . . . wanted File008 . . . got File002
FileJ in Folder1 . . . wanted File009 . . . got File003
FileK in Folder1 . . . wanted File010 . . . got File004

Since BRU is retiring, I guess my “druthers” won’t be realized. THANKS A MILLION for a great product!
