Use an INI instead of the Registry (INI based settings)

Postby Stefan » Wed Jan 18, 2006 11:38 am

Hi Jim,

- i want to carry all my BRU settings with me on an USB-Stick (and don't want to export the registry allways)
- i don't wanna leave tracks in the registry of other computers (i don't want mess them up)

So is it please possible for you to
switch to an INI based settings store ?

If BRU startet and finds an "Bulk Rename Utility.INI" in his folder,
he should use this instead of the registry.

Thank you
Stefan

There's not many settings which get stored in the registry, mainly the position of the window, the menu-selections, and the name of the favourite.

It's probably quite a simple change to do this, I'll see what's involved.

Yes, this is now done.

It goes against ALL Microsoft's programming principles - but I agree, INI files are much better than the registry!

All settings are now in an INI file EXCEPT:

1) Window Placement
2) Always On Top setting
3) Column widths in the file-list window

Everything else now lives in an INI file (derived from the name of the EXE, so you could have multiple INI files if your wish). This will be in the next beta release.

Thank you! You are the best.

 an central place for all this windows settings
is no bad thing, but sinse the registry is binary and not (easy )readable on
an not running system, and while the settings are hide on so many places
in the registry (not bru settings), i preffer INIs too.
I would love an System32\ini folder instead of the binary registry (i will post this in the ms forum :D )

All settings are now in an INI file EXCEPT:

1) Window Placement
2) Always On Top setting
3) Column widths in the file-list window

And HKCR\Directory and things like .bru too, if set by user.
But do you want to explain why this point 1-3 must stay. ?

Minor suggestion: new menu entry: "Close and clean Registry"

Everything else now lives in an INI file (derived from the name of
the EXE, so you could have multiple INI files if your wish). This will be in
the next beta release.

Jim

Thank you very much Jim.

It makes sense to keep the window-placement in the registry. If you had certain windows placement settings stored, and you went to a computer with a different screen resolution etc, then the settings would be wrong.

All the rest have moved, but I've afraid these ones need to stay.
