Filter files to be displayed via a character search ?

Postby spacev2 » Sun Jul 28, 2024 2:33 am

I have a folder with thousands of files in it. I only want to display the files that have the word "FX" in them to further edit them as desired.

The only workaround I have found is to enable the "Display Options / Sorting / Group Affected Files" setting, but this is clunky workaround.

I just want to be able to quickly filter the displayed files via a character search to be able to further edit them as desired with the BRU renaming rules, is this currently possible ?

Thanks

Filters(12) Mask for names with FX

Postby Luuk » Sun Jul 28, 2024 6:03 am

Filters(12) needs a "Mask" like *FX* , then to click the blue-arrows beside "Mask" to display only those names.
If needed, there is also checkmarks for "Match Case" and "Subfolders".

Thank you for the clarification, it now works how I expect it to work.

Previously I did reference the user manual but I still couldn't figure it out because I think the documentation is a little bit unclear. In the user manual under "All Renaming Options / Filters (12) (a.k.a Selections)" it states the following:

quote "· Filter - Specify a file mask to use. Normally this would be *.*, or *.mp3, or *.doc etc. Note that this section is only used to govern which files/folders are displayed. You still need to select a file or folder in order to rename it. So for example, entering a filter of "*.mp3" means that only your MP3 music files will be shown. You can enter multiple file masks by separating them with a space, e.g. "*.mp3 *.doc *.xls". Note: changes to this field only take effect when you move the cursor to a different field or click a different control. This is to prevent the list from rebuilding with each keystroke as you type. You can also prefix a criteria with the exclamation mark (!) to perform a "not" expression. So "* !*.doc !*.mp3" will select everything except Word documents and MP3 files. Double quotation marks (") can be used around text containing white spaces, e.g. "file with spaces.*". To use the quotation mark character itself, use \". " unquote.

It doesn't describe very clearly what the differences are between a * mask or a ** mask. Secondly it does not mention anywhere that the blue arrows need to be clicked to apply the mask. It would be nice if the documentation would be updated and additionally it would be nice if the hitting the "enter" key would also apply the mask.

Thanks for your help.

Filters(12) Mask for names with FX

After typing a "Mask"... can press Enter, click the blue-arrows, the folder-tree, or just any other setting.
Even tabbing outside of the "Mask" text-box, will conduct anything that was typed into the text-box.
If masks are saved into a .bru settings-file, they will conduct automatically.

If using the multiple-mask-editor or recent-entries to type the mask in a text-box window, clicking OK wont conduct the mask.
Im guessing its because the focus/cursor stays inside of the Mask field?? Im really no ideas if maybe its a bug, or on purpose??

Hi, yes, we can't refresh the list every time a character is entered in the mask, as some of the refreshes will take a long time.
So for the Mask field in Filters (12), the list is refreshed when the cursor leaves the field or the refresh button is clicked.
