Cyclical file naming in recursive folders.

Postby Hughso2 » Thu Sep 04, 2025 10:49 pm

Hello,
I am new to the product and this maybe amore of question of is it possible versus how to:

I have a series of folders , Folder 1, Folder 2 , Folder 3...
inside each folder are 6 PDF files Admin.pdf, Phone.pdf, notes.pdf, Physical.pdf, labs.pdf,privacy.pdf

I need to rename each pdf file uniquely but cyclical- start again on the next folder
Admin.pdf becomes Admin-Clip 1.pdf
Phone.pdf becomes Phone-Clip 6.pdf
Notes.pdf becomes notes-Clip 3.pdf
Physical.pdf becomes Physical-Clip5.pdf
Lab.pdf becomes labs-Clip 2.pdf
Privacy.pdf becomes privacy-Clip 4.pdf

I have been using named pairs and opening each folder and renaming 6 at a time, but it is taking a long tome and i need to process 100's of folders and files.

Thank you in advance
This needs to happen foreach file within each folder

Admin.pdf becomes Admin-Clip 1.pdf
Phone.pdf becomes Phone-Clip 6.pdf
Notes.pdf becomes notes-Clip 3.pdf
Physical.pdf becomes Physical-Clip5.pdf
Lab.pdf becomes labs-Clip 2.pdf
Privacy.pdf becomes privacy-Clip 4.pdf

Is this valid for every folder, that is, Admin.pdf becomes Admin-Clip 1.pdf and Phone.pdf becomes Phone-Clip 6.pdf ?

If positive then use Bulk Rename Utility's Replace (3) with Subfolders enabled. Steps:

1. In Selection (12) check Subfolders so every folder/subfolder is included.
2. In the main file list, select the files (or just leave them all selected if you want to rename all matching files).
3. Open Replace (3) and enter these two fields:

- Replace:
Admin|Phone|Notes|Physical|Lab|Privacy

- With:
Admin-Clip 1|Phone-Clip 6|Notes-Clip 3|Physical-Clip 5|Labs-Clip 2|Privacy-Clip 4

4. Preview the New Name column to confirm results (it will show names like Admin-Clip 1.pdf, Phone-Clip 6.pdf, etc.).
5. When satisfied, click Rename.
