Can I rename files in multiple folders simultaneously?

Postby ProvPC » Mon Jan 06, 2020 7:13 am

and leave the folder names intact?

For example, let's say I have 20 folders of pictures from a wedding.
The folders might be named something like:
Wedding #01
Wedding #02...
Wedding #20

Inside each folder there are a random number of photos, with no particular order. I want to rename them sequentially, as in:
Wedding - 000.jpg
Wedding - 001.jpg
Wedding - 002.jpg

Bulk rename makes doing this really easy for each folder individually. Is there a way for me to select ALL of the Wedding folders, and rename the files inside, so that each folder name remains the same, but the files inside each one are renamed in sequence, with the first file in each folder starting over with 000?

See if

10:Numbering, Folder (checkbox)

does what you need.

Thank you for your reply!
I may be doing it incorrectly, but that seems to rename the folders themselves, and leaves the file within un-renamed.

Well, I'm getting closer to what I'm trying to do...

I've found that if I check 10) Files and Subfolders, the files in the subfolders get renamed. However, the increment in each subfolder is adjusted by one, so it looks like this:
Subfolder #1
file 000
file 001
file 002

Subfolder #2
file 001
file 002
file 003

Subfolder #3
file 002
file 003
file 004

and so on. Is there some way for me to increment the files within each folder, but also have each folder's files start over at 000?

With what I'm testing with, looks to be OK:

With every subdirectory, numbering starts at 000 & increments from there for any selected files.

Thank you - I will happily give this a try!

Can you explain to me what the expression in RegEx (1) is doing? I'd like to try to understand WHY it works as well.

Oh - I beg your pardon! I didn't notice that it's not actually being used.

Thanks again - I'll try your settings!

I don't seem to get the same results. Would you mind telling me what I'm missing?

My test includes several folders, seen on the left. The files inside match the folder names, as seen on the right. Also as seen on the right, the numbers appear to be continuing to increment across the folders, rather than starting over with each new folder.

You don't have the 'Folder' box checkmarked in 10:Numbering.

Also note that having the Sub Dir. column visible (& expanded) will help in visualizing what will happen.
Because in your example (as was in mine), the same named file (can) appear in both the Old & New names & without the subdirectory displaying you can't distinguish just where the particular file resides & if new New name is as expected. (And even then, it can still be "odd" to look & think about.)

That was it!

I must have compared my settings to your half a dozen times and overlooked the checkbox each time. Thank you for your help! It works perfectly!

Can you post step by step what you checked in each section? Thanks.

@2ndChance, this should get you started:

#2Name=Remove

#9AppendFolderName=Prefix

#10Numbering:
Mode=Suffix
Start=0 (or-1)
Pad=3
Inc=1
Sep=Space-Space
Folder=(checked)

#12Filters
Files=(checked)
SubFolders=(checked)

Then click the SubDir-heading in the filename-pane to sort your files by folder.
That makes it easier to see how #10Folder=(checked) restarts numbering for each folder.
There's a good manual posted in the How-To section... viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4743
Cheers.
