How do i prevent Bulk renamer from auto-sorting added items?

Postby PlumishPlum » Sun Dec 22, 2024 1:06 am

I have a few thousand of files with the following naming convention:

1234567_page_1
1234567_page_24
1234567_page_17
1234567_page_10
1234567_page_2
1234567_page_31

This is the correct order of the files i want to rename (they are badly named, that's why i want to rename them).
The issue is, when i add them to Bulk Renamer Utility they are automatically sorted as:

1234567_page_1
1234567_page_10
1234567_page_17
1234567_page_2
1234567_page_24
1234567_page_31

While this makes logical sense, it is a wrong order for do the renaming.
I tried going to display options>sorting and enabling/disabling the sorting options, but nothing.

How can i tell Bulk Renamer Utility to not auto-sort my files and process them in the order they are in it's origin folder?

Try setting the sort on a non-used column in the display.
Like add 'Copy/Move to Location' column & set that as the sort.

Then dragging a set of randomly sorted file names (I used Everything 1.5a to randomize them) into BRU, results in the files listed - in a reversed, same sorted order.

So if you had source files of:
1 9 3 6 7 2
They are displayed as:
2 7 6 3 9 1

With that, you could (untested) do something like:

10:Numbering, Mode:Prefix, Pad:4 (so you're good through 9999)

& rename your files.

Then, load that same set of renamed files, this time sorted by Name (reverse), so they will display 9999...1 & should be in the original (rather then reversed) sort order.

Rename your files.

Finally, removing the 4-digit prefix you added at the onset.

I suppose you have some manner to drag your source files, ordered as you want, into BRU?

Another options might be the Rename-Pairs feature.
You might see how that loads into BRU?

Hello!

I tried this but...it doesn't seem to do anything.

I added 'Copy/Move to Location' as a sorting criteria column but it doesn't do anything.

Here's a screenshot:

As you can see here, the issues begin at page 850 where it auto-sorts to p10 after p1 (this is wrong) and the 'Copy/Move to Location' criteria does nothing.

I have been trying multiple things but to no avail, every time i drag the folder with the pages in the are auto-sorted. I also tried using the file browser on the left to manually reach the folder with the pages but the auto-sort still happens.

As it is, I take it that you dragged the files from Windows Explorer into BRU?

i drag the folder

Does the folder display the files in the wanted sort order?

Do you have a manner to display your set of files in the ordering in which you want, such that you can drag them into BRU?

You know that p10 comes before or after some other p#, but how would someone else know that?
Where should p10 belong?

How do you know that the order should be 1 24 17 10 2 31 (per the original post)?
How are you sorting, or are you sorting the names such that they do display in that order?

If dragging from Windows Explorer always sorts the names alphabetically, you can drag the names from Everything in (reverse) expected order, but you have to be able to get them to display in that order, first.

Actually, looks like Windows Explore can also drag&drop in the order displayed in W/E, but you kind of have to fudge it to get it to work, but it looks like it does (& again, the files will end up in reversed expected order in BRU).

actually someone said, that if you d&d from Windows Explorer & start the drag with focus on the first file, they'll be dragged as wanted. (Otherwise, not.)

So you select your set of files - but they must be ordered as you want in Windows Explorer (or Everything), then while still selected, hold down left mouse button - while it is over the very first file in your ordered list, & then drag into BRU. With that, & with BRU set to sort by 'Copy/Move', the files should then turn up in BRU in (reverse) sorted order.

Again, your drag must start from the very first file. Any other, & they will not display (reversed) as wanted in BRU.

And that all depends on you being able to have the files in the sorted order that you need to begin with.

Yes, i also used BRU's file explorer, this thing:

It doesn't matter how are the files or folders added to BRU, it will always arrange it it's way.

My files are in the correct order on windows.
It is BRU that is unable to display them in the correct order.

Even if i used everything 1.5 to BRU, BRU will still sort it in it's special (wrong) order.

Look here:

The highlighted green parts.

The files are in the correct order on windows, the second i display them on BRU (either by dragging or opening the folder in the file explorer of BRU), they get sorted.

Hi, did you try the option "Display Options" -> Sorting -> Logical Sorting? It should match Windows sorting mode.

Regarding these files:

1234567_page_1
1234567_page_24
1234567_page_17
1234567_page_10
1234567_page_2
1234567_page_31

That are shown in BRU as:

1234567_page_1
1234567_page_10
1234567_page_17
1234567_page_2
1234567_page_24
1234567_page_31

Is this after drag and drop into BRU ?

I have a similar problem where Windows correctly sorts files, while BRU doesn’t. I tried enabling/disabling “Logical Sorting”, but having it ticked actually made things worse. If I could make BRU sort files like Windows does, it would save me a TON of time with the renaming process. Looking forward to a solution to this!

Hi, can you post an example of how Windows sorts that you would like to see in BRU?

Sure!

I made a thread about it recently:

My files are in the correct order on windows.

And they are also in the correct order in Everything?
And in each case, with W/E & Everything, you're simply sorting by Name, (alpha, logical)?

In your (last) screenshot, the filenames look to be sorted; alpha, logically, so,
p0 p1 p4 ... p10 p12 p14 ...

If I'm understanding the above correctly, then all you need to do is to as mentioned above:
"Display Options" -> Sorting -> Logical Sorting?

If you are actually dealing with filenames per your OP,
1 24 17 10 2 31
then you have to do something similar to what I've mentioned before (& you would also need to first set the column sort in BRU to something "not used", so like Copy/Move).

Fixed from version 4.0.0.4 : the order of drag and drop and file explorer commands will be kept the same.
