What do you think - reverse renaming

Postby Admin » Thu Feb 08, 2007 10:22 am

I'm looking for your thoughts. At the moment BRU renames from top to bottom, e.g. the first row, then the second row, then the third row etc.

What are your thoughts on offering a "reverse order" rename.

The single advantage to this is that it would overcome one of the naming conflicts which occurs. If you have files

1.txt
2.txt
3.txt

and you want to insert a file into the list at position 2, you would want to change 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. But the first rename would fail, as 3.txt already exists.

Renaming in reverse order would do 3 to 4, then 2 to 3, etc.

Comments please.

BINGO!!
I guess that's a much better solution than possible loss of data due to unforeseen conflicts.

Ok, this is now in the new beta (same version) on the website.

I forgot to update the changelog though.

Great job, Jim. Works great when "upcounting" numbers, which was my original request.
The other way round (downcounting the new numbers to lower ones), of course results in the same error message then before, as the user then needs to disable the feature in the options menu.
As it is "hidden" in the menu, one can forget to disable reverser order numbering and wonder why the renaming doesn't work.

May you can put this option into a check field within box 10, so the user can't "forget" to check it on/off, such as the options to remove specific characters in box 5?

Thanks anyway, it already is of great help for me.

Please don't misunderstand this post, I don't want to praise myself, but to say "thanks" via the forum board does not help you at all by paying your developing/webhosting costs.

So I just donated via PayPal a few minutes ago and I hope other members will be triggered to do so, too...

And it is very much appreciated, thank you.

BRU gets downloaded a couple of hundred times per day, but I usually get one or two donations per week. I'm not upset, because after all they are donations, not fees. But there's a LOT of hard work goes into BRU (last Saturday alone, I worked 14 hours on it). So there's no doubt that more donations would be most welcome :-)

May I ask for permission to post a trigger for other members/users to donate, too?

Done. You can find it in the "suggestions" subforum.
Please move/stick it at a better place.

Thanks.
