Postby chrisjj » Sun Jul 27, 2025 8:35 pm

Where is this command pelase?

It is to import a .txt file of the filepatch of the files to be renamed. I.e. fill the Name column from a file.

Support advised me a while back that following my requiest, this command had been added, but I cannot find it and got no reply when I ask Support.

To import a text file (e.g., .txt or CSV) containing file paths and new names to fill the Name column in Bulk Rename Utility, use this command:

Actions menu > Import Rename-Pairs

Steps:
1. Prepare your text file with old and new names (full paths allowed in the old name column).
2. In Bulk Rename Utility, go to the Actions menu.
3. Select Import Rename-Pairs.
4. Choose your text file.
5. The utility will read the file and fill the "New Name" column accordingly, matching files by full path if specified.

This is described in the "Renaming From A Text File (CSV)" documentation.

Some mistake, I think. New names don't go in the Name column.

Thanks, but "The text file should contain a list of "old name" and "new name" pairs" makes clear this is not the command I'm looking for.

My .txt holds the patch of the files I want to appear in the file list.

Bulk Rename Utility offers three main methods to rename files using the Windows Clipboard:

1. Method 1: Set New Names from Clipboard
- Copy a list of new file names (one per line) to the clipboard (e.g., from Excel, Word, or File Explorer).
- In Bulk Rename Utility, select the files to rename, right-click the selection, and choose:
`Paste from Clipboard > Set New Names from Clipboard` (shortcut: Alt+N).
- The utility will rename the selected files in order, applying each clipboard name to each selected file. If there are more files than names, the names repeat.

2. Method 2: Import Rename-Pairs from Clipboard
- Copy a list of old and new name pairs to the clipboard, each pair on a separate line, separated by comma, pipe (|), or tab. Examples:
```
FileOld1,FileNew1
FileOld2,FileNew2
```
or with full paths:
```
C:\folder\FileOld1,FileNew1
```
- In Bulk Rename Utility, go to the main menu:
`Action > Import Rename-Pairs (CSV) > Import Rename-Pairs from Clipboard` (shortcut: Ctrl+Alt+C).
- The clipboard content is imported as rename pairs. Then select the files in the utility and apply the renaming according to the imported list.

3. Method 3: Paste Items from Clipboard
- Copy full file paths (one per line) to the clipboard from File Explorer or text editors. Example:
```
C:\folder\File1.ext
C:\folder\File2.jpg
```
- Right-click in the file list and choose:
`Paste from Clipboard > Paste Items from Clipboard` (shortcut: Ctrl+V)
or
`Paste from Clipboard > Clear and Paste Items from Clipboard` (shortcut: Shift+Ctrl+V).
- This pastes the files into the utility's file list for renaming. Then apply your renaming criteria as usual.

---

Summary:
- Use Method 1 to rename selected files with a simple list of new names.
- Use Method 2 to rename files based on explicit old-to-new name pairs.
- Use Method 3 to import files by their full paths from the clipboard into the utility for further renaming.

These clipboard-based methods facilitate batch renaming, especially when working with predefined lists or files from multiple folders.

Good grief. I'd never have guessed... or dared risk a command that it said to copy the files!!

Thanks. It works great.

Note to other users: the effect on the folder pane is not what you maybe expect, so take care there.
