Remove all periods in file except on extension

If I have a file like this:

10.25.2011 - TestFile.txt

How can I remove all periods from a filename, except the period on the .txt?

Actually I can answer my own question

By putting a . in the list of characters to remove, it will remove all periods except the one in the extension. So that's what I wanted.
