Can Bulk Rename reverse file names?

Postby ScottS » Sat Jun 26, 2010 6:23 am

I have an entire disk that every filename has been reversed - every file and directory - and the characters s~# added to the front of the filename.

so a filename like: Windowshurts.jpg

is now listed as: s~#gpj.struhswodniW

there are obviously thousands of files like this.

Can Bulk REname Utility handle this problem to change these filenames back to what they should be? The files are fine - no changes - just the filenames.

If Not BRU, any other suggestions? Manually changing is out of the question.

I am afraid this is not an feature of BRU.
You can try this ==> http://www.den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=4752#p4752
Note:
* check out the "Settings >Filters"
* i don't know how this will work for an entire disk ! It's an good idea to backup the whole disk first!
* keep in mind that THIS forum is not an support forum of THAT application i suggested you. If you need more assistance on this come to the other forum.
* anyway, tell us if it works, and HOW. (How many file, folders, how many GBs are renamed? How long did this take?)

HTH? :D

Thanks to the Bulk Rename Utility responsible to let us help others in that way!
It's in the meaning of Jim as i know from the past. Thank you Paul! :) You are an good one for sure.

the den4b utility worked. Thank you.

The original problem was caused by a utility called "Folder Lock" which is an encryption program that locks up a certain file folder and opens it upon entry of password. Somehow the file got messed up and when it was opened next, thousands of files were misnamed. Fortunately they all had the same mis-naming pattern, which was reversal of the filename completely, and 3 characters as a prefix.

I used the recommended utility to fix it. all told, 1800+ files were renamed in a matter of seconds. approximately 30 directories.

Folder Lock support, which used to be good, was non-responsive on this particular problem.

I have since abandoned folder lock. Thanks for referring me. Very kind of this forum to allow such referrals.

I don't understand why you say, "this is not an feature of BRU"; I guess I'm missing something.

This seems to fill the bill:
  • Under Options->Ignore check File Extensions and Directory Extensions.
  • In the File(2) field, set Name to Reverse.
  • In the Remove(5) field, set Last n to 3.

No! You are absolutely right:

Thanks for pointing out that solution.
You are welcome to help out in future too.
