Rename pictures to a date series

At the risk of getting called dumb or lazy, I'm hoping someone can step me through a simple renaming process.

The ONLY thing I need this utility for is to rename large numbers of photos - from the usual P105839.jpg (out of the camera) to a date series: 2010-06-25_001.jpg, 2010-06-25_002.jpg, 2010-06-25_003.jpg, etc.

I've sifted through the Help file several times and I've fiddled for a couple of hours with the application, but I can't, for the life of me, work out how to use it. If it can perform this task (Can it?), it would save me a huge amount of time.

This is all I'll ever need it for, and I'd appreciate it if someone could explain the process in very simple steps that don't assume any expertise.

Hi Nat, welcome.

rename large numbers of photos - from the usual P105839.jpg (out of the camera)
to a date series: 2010-06-25_001.jpg, 2010-06-25_002.jpg, 2010-06-25_003.jpg, etc.

From where did this date came from?
I simple guess you want to enter this by hand:

FROM:
P105839.jpg
P105840.jpg
P105841.jpg
TO:
2010-06-25_001.jpg
2010-06-25_002.jpg
2010-06-25_003.jpg

DO:
- copy a few of your pictures for testing to C:\Temp
- start BRU and browse to C:\temp
- (maybe use "Selections(12)" with "*.jpg")
- select your pictures in the Name column

- File(2) set to "Fixed" and enter "2010-06-25_"
- Numbering(10) set to "Suffix" , Start=1, Pad=3

- see if the NewName column is as you like.
- click on [Rename]

If all went fine try this with your real files.

The solution worked brilliantly.

I know a lot of users on this forum have said that it was really easy to work out how to use BRU, but I think it would have taken me weeks find that procedure (with the current Help file).

I don't mean to put down the program. It's extremely generous of the developer to offer it as freeware, and it obviously does a great job, but maybe, for some of us, it's not at all obvious how it can be used.
