Can no longer see any files when I open BRU

Postby brokenwhole » Wed Sep 22, 2010 8:45 pm

Hi

Have been using this excellent utility for quite a few years. Not sure what happened, but it no longer "sees" any files. I've reset all criteria, and, as far as I can see, there should be nothing preventing files appearing, but I can't do anything to get it to list files in a directory ready for renaming. Thanks! Keith (p.s. this is v 2,7, latest, on Windows XP - have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. And - by the way - is it really necessary to have to reboot for such a small utility reinstall.)

Have you tried the option F11 - Show/Hide Tree in Actions menu? Or F5 [refreshes files] and Ctrl+F5 [refreshes tree].

Honestly that's the only thing I can think of, like your Tree is not shown and your path target is an empty folder....

Hope someone with better knowledge of this answers you. Sorry my friend.

"reset all criteria Ctrl+T" do not reset the Selections(12) filter.
Try setting Selections(12) to:
Filter: *
[X] Folders
[X] Files
Name len min and max to each '0'

Ahhh, now i see you have provided an screen shot... well done!
Yes, that's the point, you have told BRU to filter (means here: show this only) for "nothing" at Selections(12),
Enter there an valid expression as *.jpg to show jpgs only, or use just the default single star ' * ' to set the filter to "show all files".
Click into the file list to see an effect.

Maybe you use an *.bru favorite file to load always the same settings?
Then you will get this mistake again.
To solve this open the *.bru file in notepad.exe
and search for
[Selections]
Filter=""

change this to
[Selections]
Filter="*"

EDIT: silly me. Now i see your screen shot tells me you use "current.bru", That's the file to edit the Filter="*" thinggy.
As far as i see/know there is no real possibility to prevent last favorite from auto-loading on startup.
But an work around is to (BRU is closed) rename your "current.bru" to something like "current.bru.TXT". Or just delete it if you don't need it.

Yes, because BRU provides an shell extension which as such can't be removed while Windows is running, and so the BRU deinstallation ask for an reboot to complete the work. (I guess no matter if you really use this extension or not... don't know for real)
And because the extension is market to remove, - and if you install the app again in next step, it may be that the "remove marker" is still there and waiting for the next reboot, for de-installing what you want to keep now again in the meantime.

HTH? :D

Thanks so much for the detailed and quick response. I'm very impressed! I wish I'd realized it was so simple to fix! I must have used filter for something the last time I used it (haven't used it much), and next time I got into it, assumed that the absence of something in the filter box meant "filter for nothing". (Polite suggestion: make it so, since it's unlikely anybody really wants to filter everything out :)

Now I can get back to renaming files!

Many thanks, Keith
