Bulk rename utilty does not work with Vista

Postby pengels » Sun Jul 16, 2006 12:23 pm

I donwloaded the 2.3.6.0 version and installed it 7/15. There were no problems with the install. when I start it I receive the message: Bulk Rename Utility has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I then click the Close Program button and conntinue with other things. I tried the Unicode and not unicode versions, both have the same problem. I do not know how to extract more information from Windows regarding why it thinks it has stopped working. I am running the Beta 2 version of Vista.

There won't be any support for Vista until it is released, and even then there is no guarantee that it will be supported. I do not know which DLLs will be shipped with Vista.

However I can't think of any reason why it won't work.

My own hardware isn't compliant with Vista (unsupported RAID) so I'm not in a position to test or debug - and nor am I in a position to buy new hardware...

It may work but I cannnot tell because it does not get into execution. It is stopped before it is started. Is there anything I can do to help you?Unfortunately, I get the message and there is not a button to click to get additional information. We will do some looking (at the Microdsoft Vista site) to see if there is a way to get more information. It could be a Vista bug.

I can create a debug-enabled version which creates a logfile, which you can then send to me. But not for a week, as I'm away until next weekend.

I am thinking there may be something messed up from the install procress such as Registry entries which prevents it from getting off the ground or writing into a log file? Anyway, so much for comments from the peanut gallery.

I assume you have my email address from my registration? When you send it I will have lots of time to work on it.

BRU doesn't rely upon any registry entries at all. It simply runs through the Shell Namespace looking for files and folders.

Once I have some time I'll try to get you a debug version.

Yes, but I just don't have any time at the moment. I'm afraid I won't be able to make BRU Vista-compatible for several months.

Do you know what the problem is?

If you still need my help when you can get to it I will do what I can for you.

No, I've no idea, as I don't have access to Vista to be able to run it and trace any problems.

If I get any free time I will try to install Vista under Virtual PC

If you want to take another vacation and fly to Florida my Vista machine is yours, 24 by7. Unfortunately, I cannot include a picture of the beaches and palm trees to get your interest for visit after hurricane season is over.

I think I may have made some progresss on this. Let me play a bit this afternoon, and if it looks promising then I'll upload a beta.

There's a beta on the website. Perhaps you could try it?

I've tried it in Build 5384.
