I know I'm missing something simple, but I'm stumped:
I want to rename each of the files in a directory containing mixed filenames and file types. Examples:
tumblr_mou22guLthT1sc7v9fo1_500
DSC_4426.JPG
51551-19749.pdf
Football Schedule $ 3 11 Sep.xlxs
Obbie B alir.doc
100030b.jpg
1010-60.gif
merge 444.txt
etc.
I'd like to randomly [or, if necessary, sequentially] rename each file with a six-digit number -- retaining the file type, but no other characters:
103660
107415.jpg
331652.pdf
665344.xlxs
902334.doc
410323.jpg
235442.txt
etc.
I cannot figure out the proper combination of options in the utility's sort command page.
-Even when I set an increment of, say, 17, in the Numbering (10), command, the resulting file names increment by only 1.
-I can only get it to rename 99 files; then, the rest of the list remains unnamed.
-I cannot find the command to eliminate the leading _ character on the newly named files.
Can anyone help, please?
