How to rename .jpg and .tif versions of the same files?

Postby Freycinet » Fri Nov 15, 2024 6:44 pm

Hi all,

I scanned my old negatives and now have folders with .jpg and .tif versions of the same photos.

Now that I want to rename the files, is there an easy way to ensure that all the .tifs get the same names as all the .jpgs?

If I only wanted date and running number file names it would be easy of course. I would just do the same operation twice, first for the .jpgs and then for the .tifs.

However, in addition to the date and running number I also want to name the files individually. Is there a way to do that, first for the .jpgs and then copy all the .jpg file names to the .tif files?

Folder looks like this atm:

BBBBCDELBHEHDGF019.jpg
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF019.tif
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF020.jpg
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF020.tif
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF021.jpg
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF021.tif
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF022.jpg
BBBBCDELBHEHDGF022.tif

Thanks a million for any help!

Hi! yes it's possible in the latest version of Bulk Rename Utility (v4) using Link Files by Extension.

Link Files by Extension
You can link files by their extension in the Renaming Options Menu.

This link option allows you to link files by their extension, where you specify a Master file extension and one or more Linked file extensions.
Once linked, the file names with the master file extensions will dictate how files with the linked file extensions are renamed.

Linked extensions can be multiple, separated by a comma.

Examples:
-----------------------------
Master File Extension: jpg
Linked File Extensions: raw

Result:
Given that filename.jpg and filename.raw are selected, whatever renaming is applied to filename.jpg, it will be applied to filename.raw too.

Master File Extension: jpg
Linked File Extensions: raw,png

Result:
Given that filename.jpg, filename.raw and filename.png are selected, whatever renaming is applied to filename.jpg, the same will be applied to filename.raw and filename.png too.

-----------------------------

In your case, use master jpg and extension tif

Dear "Admin",

Thank you so much. I'll forthwith download and install Version 4 and try it out!

Really good functionality.

HI admin,
Does this work if the files are in different directories? For example, if the .jpg files are in one folder and the .raw files are in another?

Looks like right now it only works if linked files are in the same directory. However it would be useful to have an option to link them across directories as well.... :!:

In the latest version there is now the option to link files also across folders.
If you want to link files across folders (not just within the same folder), enable the Allow Link Across Folders option.
