Not moving Folders

Postby anton » Mon Nov 25, 2024 6:20 pm

Hello,

I can't move Files/Folder from one Directory to another with same Paramters like for BRU V.2.7

I do not want to rename but move my E-Books sorted to specific folders, it is working fine with the old Version but after I found out there is a very new and much more beauty Version of BRU I wanted to do that there. But with same Paramters I use for V2.7 it is not moving at all with V4.0

As you can see in the Screenshots Im doing the same in both BRU but in V4.0 its neither copy nor move the Files. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for your help, I <3 BRU!

I tried the same with V 3.2.0.1 and got the same results - its not moving the files. I'm continuing to use the V2.7 and hope, you can tell me, what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks a lot!

If I'm seeing the screenshots completely, it looks like z\comics\..., where is (I suppose) should be, z:\comics\...

That aside, the 'Copy/Move to' column should be displaying the location as you have it in 13:.
Does it?

If it is a colon (:) issue, it looks like you'll need to refresh (drag your files in again, or whatever), before the change actually displays in the 'Copy/Move to' column.

PS: 4.0.0.3 is the current BRU version.

Try filling in 13:New Location - again.
That's not going to work either, will it.

Try below...

Bug.

1) 12:Filters, checkmark, Subfolders
2) 13: Copy/Move - enter a path

at that point, 'Copy/Move to', column is blank - even though you've just entered a path

3) 3:Replace (or any other item that has a checkmark option to enable/disable the feature), uncheck then recheck the checkmark - & this is even though the particular action is not being used.

Result.

'Copy/Move to' is then enumerated.

-

Preview, will also cause the missing 'Copy/Move to' text to display, & will also update it, if you've made a change to the location.

Does it work correctly once the Copy/Move to' text is updated? e.g. will the rename then move/copy the folders as needed?

Thanks for the quick Response.

My fault, you couldn't see the full lenght of the path but the Path is correct and has the with ":" - i didt not enter the path by myself, i choose it with the file requester.

Now, I tried it again the same way I did it with the V2.7 and again its not working for me. None of the files are moved, they stay in the same folder even if it says, it has processed successfully.

For better explanaiton I did it again and recorded the screen: https://streamable.com/72j54u

Actually I've done my stuff with the old V2.7 so I don't need it anymore but I love your tool and hope I can help to find the problem. It's happening also with the V3.x, only the old 2.7 is working correctly for me.

thanks & greets

I update the Folder Tree with CTRL+F5 as like the manuel says. Still, the Files arent moved, that's the issue.

If I'm understanding, & I might not be...

In your case, no actions were actually set to be done to any files.
So no files would be affected.

You did select directories.
And directories are not actually moved - at all.
At best, the directory structure would be copied at the Copy/Move to location.

Preview shows, Action, Location Change - no reference to Name Change.

If you look at ...\DC\Batman\, I believe you will find your (empty) 89 directories there.

---

(Again, if I'm understanding correctly...)

So, just what is your intention here?
Are you wanting to move said directories AND all files within from the source location to the 13:Copy/Move location?

If so, then BRU might not be the right way to go about it.

Files, will only move, if there is a renaming criteria that affects them.
So you would have to "fake" some action - that does actually change their name, & then you'd have to undo that once the files moved.

(So you could do something like add a 7:Prefix -> dumyprefix, such that the name is changed, & the files then will actually be moved. [And then, you'd have to go rename the files back again, removing "dumyprefix" from their names... And none of that makes any sense to do.)

And then after that, the source directories themselves, be they then empty or not, are left unaffected.
Only any renaming criteria that affected them is applied - at the 13:Copy/Move location.

Let me explain in detail:

I have an unsorted diretory of ebooks and I have a target Directory with Categorys. Now I want to merge the files from the unsorted Directory to the Directory with the right Catergorys. So Im selecting the files *batman* from unsorted Directory and move them to the Target-Directory "ebooks/comics/DC/batman"

So I only criteria I have is the matching with the Pattern I gave and nothing more. If you say, I need more criteria to match, then I'm surprised why its working with V2.7? Do you mean, that is not originally mentioned?

I try to use RENAME to MOVE files, yes, that is what usally the Unix/Linux-command is capable of and as I said, that worked very well with the old Version. Thats pity, when It's not to supposed to do that with the new Version because it has an improved great usabillity Gui now.

Thanks for your reply.

Okay, I tried it now with criteria like to rename the Filename and its still not working. I'll do a new Screenrecording with both, the old and the new Version to compare. I guess, I'm doing something completly wrong?

Okay, I got it! It is not possible to copy (or move) a directory to another location. The only thing it is doing is to create empty folders, just like to told. I can't use it for my purpose, but I'm glad the old V2.7 can do that, even its not suppoed to do ;-)

Thank you, I think in BRU 4 if you only select the folders then only the folders are moved and not the files inside. They can't be deleted from source as they are not empty.
Please try this instead: in Filters (12), enable the flags: files, folders, subfolders. Then select all folders and their files to move. In this way, all folders and files should be moved.
