Can't see hidden files, even with the option checked! Help!

Newbie here...

Apologies if this has been dealt with before, but i couldnt seem to find an answer when searching through the posts.

I am looking to remove certain symbols from files/folders before they are uploaded onto a sharepoint site.
Whenever i select the appropriate folder structure there is no difference if i select the hidden checkbox or not in the selection section, the file count remains the same even though i know there is a hidden file there with a filename that needs to be changed.
Am i being stupid and missing something obvious.
