How to replace file names including semicolons?

Postby torput » Tue Sep 29, 2009 8:08 pm

I have a folder full of files created with Mac, and all the file names contain time which looks like 22;06;37;20. I want to make them look like 22_06_37_20.

I can rename them manually on Windows XP's Explorer, however I've not found a way to use Bulk Rename Utility to rename all the files (just using Replace(3) with semicolon doesn't seem to work).

Is there a way to replace all ; with _?

Hi torput,

I can't reproduce your problem on an XP SP3 system. Everything works well when replacing ; with _
Even the other way round works fine.

You might try another option. You could use a combination of sections 2 (File) and 8 (Auto Date):
Section 2:
Name: Remove -> this will remove the previous filenames
Section 8:
Mode: Suffix
Type: Creation (Curr.)
Format: YMD HMS
Seg.: _
Cent.: activated
This would lead to e.g. 2009_09_12_17_07_28.JPG

Cheers

It seems to work with short file names. Please try if you can rename the following file name: (contains also space)

clip-2009-08-08 15;18;56.mov

Thanks!

Works fine, too with BRU 2.7.0.3! No problems at all.

I don't get it!

I have 2.7.1.1. I select the file, and to Repl. (3) and give:
Replace ;
with _

The "new name" still contains semicolons?

I still can't reproduce your failure. Maybe there is anything strange with your original files.

To avoid being spammed over and over I don't want to tell my address here so if there is no private content within the files, would you please upload one or two of them to Rapidshare and tell its link here?

I asked this question in Superuser, and it seems that copying to file from Mac OSX to Windows is causing this issue:

http://superuser.com/questions/49679/how-to-batch-rename-files-copied-from-osx-to-windows-with-in-filenames

Sorry for not mentioning this in the first post, I didn't know it was relevant at that point of time.

Okay, so I'll close this topic for me now.

But interesting to know there are other batch renamers that may help in special cases.
