BRU struggling with scanning folder with lots of files?

Postby art2work4 » Sun Nov 02, 2025 8:48 am

So I have folders with sometimes thousands of pictures. When I start BRU and select such a folder in the tree on the left, then Scanning those folders takes forever.
When I open such a folder in WIN Explorer the files are shown almost instantly.
What could be the cause for this slow scanning?

thanks

Do you have Renaming Options > ID3 / EXIF Data / File Properties ticked?

No, it's not ticked, since I thought that as of the latest version this was not required anymore...

My photo's are currently grouped by year. The funny thing is that Win Explorer opens the subfolder (by year) almost instantly, so I just wonder what BRU is doing that causes this delay?

Do you have certain renaming options enabled by default (that you used to first have to tick one of the Renaming Options for)?

On my end, i7-3770S 8GB of RAM (so certainly no speedster), it takes ~36 seconds to load a directory with 100K files.

And yes, that is slower then with my file manager or Windows Explorer.

(Now, aside from load time, entering rename parameters is also rather slow.
Like 3:Replace, '01' with 'XXX', simply entering those values into the dialog box
& for BRU [as it is] set to highlight changes, that is time consuming.
But be it that it is...)

During both load, & entering rename parameters, the BRU does show a progress bar on its statusbar.
