EXIF date info not showing?

I am new here and to BRU and probably have simply done something dumb. I select a file, uncheck everything except "File (2)" and "Auto Date (8)", set File (2) to "Remove", set Auto Date to Mode:Prefix, Fmt to YMD HMS and then try every setting for Type. I either get yesterday's date, which is when changed the size of the file, or a blank before the file extension. Same on a little over 5,000 other files. If I check the EXIF info by other means I can see the correct date and time. Among the over 5,000 files are those shot by Canon and Sony cameras and a Motorola phone camera. In case it might mean something, the field I find the correct information in is "Shooting Time:".
Windows 7 Ultimate is the OS. Any ideas???
