rename not working for me in BRC - it WOULD rename

Postby czc » Mon Jun 02, 2008 8:37 pm

hi,
just starting to use BRC and trying to name all files in directory from TigerBengalSomething.jpg to ZebraSomething.jpg.
within the directory with the files, i typed:
"C:\Program Files\Bulk Rename Utility\BRC32.exe" /REPLACECS:TigerBengal:Zebra

and it comes back with messages such as:
Filename TigerBengal_Walk.jpg would be renamed to Zebra_Walk.jpg

but nothing has changed. why would it say "WOULD be changed"? i checked the properties and the files are writable.

then i tried running from the program files directory. i typed:

BRC32.exe /REPLACECS:"TigerBengal":"Zebra" /DIR:"C:\Animals"

and it said:
Processing Folder C:\Animals

but nothing had changed.

what am i doing wrong??
thanks.

Did you add the /execute parameter? Doesn't look like it...

thank you. sorry i hadn't read the usage more carefully. i do not use DOS very much (i try to avoid it) but i would like to make a couple of suggestions for the help.
1) in unix, if you type in a command and the necessary parameters are not present, it would automatically print a usage statement. so typing just "BRC32.exe" should automatically throw you into help.
(perhaps this is not the DOS way).
2) at the top of the help, it would be helpful to show an example of usage. perhaps it is obvious to regular DOS users, but i'm sure there are other non-DOS users who this would help.

example:
****************************************
Bulk Rename Command Line, by Jim Willsher

Invoke the utility with arguments according to your requirements.
BRC32.exe /argument1:value1:value2:value3 /argument2:value4:value5 ...

NOTE: all argurments preceded by "/" and all values separated by ":"

ie: BRC32.exe /REPLACECS:oldName:newName /execute

NOTE: you must use the "/execute" argument if you want the command to actually execute your instructions. otherwise, you are only running a test of your changes.

******************************************

i know it may seem idiotic to many, but the point of documentation is to make it idiot-proof (for people like me).

thanks so much!!!!
