BUG: New drive diaolg won't go away [solved]

Postby Bacchus66 » Fri Dec 20, 2024 7:20 pm

Since I installed 4.0.0.3, any time the "A New Drive has been Detected Dialog .. " shows up, such as when I stick in a USB drive, or when my NAS drives temporarily appear to have disappeared for some reason, it won't go away. Whether I click yes or no to the Do you want to refresh question, the dialog just blinks and re-appears. Further, the app will not even shut down if I go to the task bar and select "close all windows" from the BRU taskbar icon. I have to go to task Manager and choose "End Process" to shut it down. I am on Window 10 22H2 if that matters.

I should note that I don't know if it would go away if I clicked yes or no in direct response to it appearing (ie within a few moments at most). I usually have BRU running in the background, rather than constantly starting it and closing it, so the dialog usually appears when I'm doing something else. Which means it can be a while before I notice it's presence the next time I need to rename something.

Thanks,
Peter S

Unable to confirm on my end.
Win7 x64, BRU x86

I plug in a USB flash drive, I'm prompted to add, I accept, it's added the the folder three, & that's it.

I can see the drive contents, & can exit BRU as expected.

Hi, what version of Windows? Could the issue be related to the dialog appearing but it is not clicked away while the drive "connects/disconnects" multiple times?

In the latest version, drive detection can be disabled in the program preferences.

Sorry for my delayed reply, but thanks for that.I thought I had replied to the windows question late the day after XMas but it looks like I didn't click send or something.

In any case my reply was to confirm that it was Windows 10 as noted in OP. Also that yes it could certainly be multiple disconnects/reconnects as I do not routinely uses USB drives but do have a local NAS. Those disconnects do happen between my CPU and my NAS if there is a power burp. Both are on separate backup power, but neither the router nor the hub that is between them have backup power. Still, I usually don't get that many in such a short time frame as to be that noticeable and usually the disconnect affects Windows Explorer as well. However that was certainly a possibility. I actually got my first (or maybe second?) such notice re a new drive since then today. While there was only one that went away with a single click, it did remind me to check this thread.

I'll download the new version now.

Thanks again!

Using Bulk Rename Utility version 4.1.0.0 on Windows 11.
As soon as app opens, that darn pop-up appears - takes me forever to try to clear it just to get to Preferences.

My recommendation to the developers - auto disable this pop-up and, if the user wants to refresh the folder tree if a new drive is detected, they can go into Preferences and click on Yes.

I can't get past the popup window "New drive detected ..." to even open preferences.

Where in preferences is that setting?

Can I change it in the ini file?

Thanks

Never mind ... I fought my way the the endless speed loop and got to the preferences and found the "ask if new drive" option and turned it off.

Hi,
same problem here, program has been working for month, now the drive detection box makes the program unuseable.
might be connected to stored credentials for mapped drives?
OS Win 10 x64
Could you please give info on how to set the preference outside of the program, e.g. in the registry? or where ever
i mean its a powerfull free tool, strange to see it disabled so easily
kind regards

I'll assume this is the same as setting the setting within the program:
'Ask to refresh the folder tree if a new drive is detected', & you'd want to set that to, 'No'.

In the Windows Registry, you'd want to set "bru.detect_drive" to '0'.

(You should be able to copy below, save it as BRU-no-new-drive-dialog.reg,
then right-click the .reg file, & select 'Merge', which should bring up a UAC
prompt requesting that action to merge said key into the Windows Registry.)

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TGRMN Software\Bulk Rename Utility\Preferences]
"bru.detect_drive"=dword:00000000

Then fire up BRU & see if it actually accomplishes the task of not prompting.

(Oh, btw, bye default, they Key, Preferences is there, with only a 'Default' entry within.
There is no, "bru.detect_drive"=dword:00000000 line at all.
So not seeing that line, means that the drive detection option is enabled.
With that line, it should be disabled.
[One might expect the use of values of 1/0, but in this case, it is there/or not.])
