Prevent Duplicates causing filename issues

Postby bigi » Wed Feb 11, 2026 2:57 am

I use the Prevent duplicates option as i have a lot of files which are sometimes the exact same name and i need to keep them both (one might be WAV, one FLAC, One MP3 for example).

This normally results in BRU during a rename r formatting operation adding _1 or _2 etc to the end of the filename. This falls over if there is a . elsewhere in the name! In this case, it seems to find the first . in the string and add the _1/_2 to that, not the end of the string:

Airglobe - Aurora Rising (2RU085) [WEB] (2026) >> Airglobe - Aurora Rising (2RU085) [WEB] (2026)_1
Airglobe - Aurora Rising (2RU085) [WEB] (2026) >> Airglobe - Aurora Rising (2RU085) [WEB] (2026)_2 << This works Great

T.O.M. - Dreamstate Protocol (PTN169) [WEB] (2026) >> T.O.M_1. - Dreamstate Protocol (PTN169) [WEB] (2026)
T.O.M. - Dreamstate Protocol (PTN169) [WEB] (2026) >> T.O.M_2. - Dreamstate Protocol (PTN169) [WEB] (2026) << This not so Great!

Can the logic on this be changed to ensure it always appends the end of the string instead of the first full stop?

Prevent Duplicates when removing extensions

Postby Luuk » Sun Feb 15, 2026 4:31 am

Prevent Duplicates will always append to the very end of filenames, typically just before any final period.
The only way to override this (with Prevent Duplicates) is using 'Change Format' with some custom-string.

But when using the checkmark for "Renaming Options, File/Folders Extensions, Rename File Extensions"...
Then its possible to destroy that final period, and rename like in your examples.
Another way to destroy it, could be using Extensions(11) with "Remove".

If trying to remove the checkmark doesn't work, can exit BRU to then edit your .ini-file manually.
The line should look exactly like... Ignore File Extensions=0

If you need to destroy extensions, just make sure that your renaming criteria adds a . to the very end.
That would protect any filenames having . in them, but then another rename is needed to remove it.

I’m not trying to remove extensions because these are folders, sorry for the confusion!

Ah folder names, that could be the issue.
