(Just rambling...)

BRU 3500 beta
Win7 x64 (& I happened to throw in BRU x86), Windows "Aero" ("theme") disabled

Show Only Items Affected

- should simply be a toggle that hides/unhides

as it is, once you've Show Only,
there is no way to get back to the original (full) set of files

(very possible you'll want to run a set of differing options on a particular set of files, consecutively,
so that not all happen to be selected, & though you've "hidden" unselected, you'll still want to be able
to unhide them so that the next operation [potentially] will affect them.)

-

Mouseover (in the file list)

on an overflow item, shows a tooltip
- that is truncated even more then the visible overflowed item
rather then showing a full tooltip of the overflowed item

-

Picture Viewer (& not that I'm seeing much value)

maybe ? should (by default) maintain source aspect ration (sized to the dragged viewer window size)

-

Picture Viewer

is non-modal & is apt to get "lost", depending...
(like if BRU is maximized & you jump to some other maximized program, then return back to BRU)

actually, i think in such a situation, the window actually "goes away"
- yes! WinLister sees it, then at some point, it IS gone.

similarly, the shortcut should act as a toggle

there should be a "thread" from BRU to PV such that if PV is open, it can't be "lost",
likewise, it should not be able to get stuck "behind" the BRU window

-

depending on your screen size, & if BRU is maximized, PV actually fits nicely to the right of
10:Numbering (though it does then partially cover up Logo). maybe an option to "dock" it there?

maybe it could be more generalized, such that on a pic it displays the pic, on a video file,
it displays a thumb of the clip, on a .txt, it shows text, on a binary, perhaps a hex view...

-

Show File Sizes As

if Bytes is chosen, no need for the 'B' in the actual display

-

Logo

when it is moved to the Right - just where is it (cause I'm not seeing it?) ?

-

Group Affected Files

is a "setting", but it does not act as a "setting",
in that neither d&d nor a browsed directory is not
Grouped after d&d or loading said directory

so even though it is "set", you need to deselect it, then reselect it for it to have an effect

-

Link Files by Extension

without actual testing, i can see where that would be useful for something like
.mp4 & an associated .srt (subtitle) file

-

Renaming Criteria Order

has the potential to be interesting
(specifics escape me, but seem to recall times that i said... if i could do this before that...)

-

F9

is F9 now showing less then before?

maybe like Renaming Criteria Order, there could be a user defined Order(s) of...
- eh, no. really no need, F9 is a toggle & that's probably more then sufficient

-

Context-menu, Preview

is there any need for that?
as it is, it does not open PV, nor even the (user defined) default picture viewer (for pics)
(but rather something called Windows Photo Viewer)
& as it is, a double-click on the file name will open it in the (user defined) picture viewer

oh... what is it, is it that actually "windows explorer" is providing the Preview entry,
& not BRU, necessarily?

Hi therube, thank you for the feedback! 8)

Show Only Items Affected

Show Only Items Affected is Ctrl+9 , to go back to all use F5.

Mouseover (in the file list)

This should show the complete text of an item on mouse over if the item is truncated with ... in the file list.

Picture Viewer (& not that I'm seeing much value)

You are probably right! Picture Viewer has not been worked on for a while!

Show File Sizes As

if Bytes is chosen, no need for the 'B' in the actual display

Agree

Logo

when it is moved to the Right - just where is it (cause I'm not seeing it?) ?

This is a bit confusing because it only applies to large screens where it is moved to the right, if screen small then it is not shown.

Group Affected Files

is a "setting", but it does not act as a "setting",
in that neither d&d nor a browsed directory is not
Grouped after d&d or loading said directory
so even though it is "set", you need to deselect it, then reselect it for it to have an effect

Yes, we need to look into this, you are right.

Link Files by Extension

without actual testing, i can see where that would be useful for something like
.mp4 & an associated .srt (subtitle) file

Yes or JPG and RAW or multiple formats for the same photo.

Renaming Criteria Order

has the potential to be interesting
(specifics escape me, but seem to recall times that i said... if i could do this before that...)

Yes, in this way the order of the renaming can be changed.

F9

is F9 now showing less then before?

This was not changed, you can use Ctrl+F9 or just F9

Context-menu, Preview

oh... what is it, is it that actually "windows explorer" is providing the Preview entry, & not BRU, necessarily?

Yes, this must be from Windows Explorer (the bottom part of the context menu is)

Hi , regarding

Group Affected Files

is a "setting", but it does not act as a "setting",
in that neither d&d nor a browsed directory is not
Grouped after d&d or loading said directory
so even though it is "set", you need to deselect it, then reselect it for it to have an effect

Yes, we need to look into this, you are right.

The help file says :
This option allows you to sort your file listing in the normal way, but with all "affected" files together (files with new name). Therefore, all files with "new names" will be sorted together, and all files which are not affected by your renaming criteria will be sorted together. When you click a column-heading to sort the files, all the files which are affected (normally shown in green) will be grouped together. Note that this does not apply to the Size, Date or Attributes columns. If this option is activated, after having selected some files/folders click on a column-heading to group the files with "new name" together.

So I think it is a permanent option that applies only when sorting files, not when selecting them.

Recent Entries
- only applies to the current session

(was kind of expecting the histories to be carried forward)
(i suppose, but didn't look, if you saved the .bru, then /that/ history would be saved ?)

3.5.0.0 BETA - Recent Entries

Postby Luuk » Tue Jul 16, 2024 12:27 am

I think that recents only get saved when using the text-box-window (F8 or clicking the 6-dots)?
And then get saved to... HKCU\Software\TGRMN Software\Bulk Rename Utility\Recent Entries.
If its a glitch I do like it this way, so my experiments dont always get added.

If conducting experiments and finding a good solution, can just F8 and it will be pre-typed for saving.
The only problem for now, is that leading/trailing spaces are auto-removed when saving any recents.
But this is already fixed for the next version, so Im just add them until then (not in the registry).

Yes, at the moment, recent entries only get saved after clicking on F8 or on the dots. From there, you can also click on "Manage Recent Entries" to re-arrange them, add or remove.

What do you guys think about the new "Pad Numbers" in Name (2)?
Is it useful? On the forum it looks like padding of existing numbers in filenames is often requested.

And do you think it would be useful to be able to run multiple BRU at the same time? Have an option for that? Atm, only one instance is allowed.

thanks

I believe that "Pad Numbers" will be useful for many users because already Im answered probably a dozen times about padding the numbers, and even leaving links to similiar posts.. But sometimes a user will reference one of them on how to adapt, because modifying the regex is often too complicated for such a simple task.. So this can make it much easier for many users, and if its not good enough there is "Name Segment" and Filters(12) "Mask" to help which numbers get padded.. And there is always the forums or RegEx(1) for more complicated number-matching.. For myself, Im never use a second .bru-file for conducting renames, but it seems like there was at least 3-times where somebody does either request it, or did have a situation where it could have provided them a solution.

Thank you, in the next build 3.5.0.1, there will be an option in the new Preferences Dialog where one can allow multiple instances of BRU. 8)
