Compare and Rename Files

Postby Fleuch » Mon Mar 31, 2025 4:40 pm

This follows on from a post in another thread.

Consider two different hard drives. The same files are saved on each HDD but with different names and there is a requirement to synchronise the file names on both drives without having to do it file by file. Where there are a large number of folders with a reasonable number of files in each folder, setting up a .csv or .txt file for each folder is labor intensive.

One possible approach is to select and copy file names from one drive and replace/paste file names on second drive, after shifting focus in BRU to the second drive.

Another is a split window showing both drives, files highlighted in each window accompanied by a copy file name only and transfer direction commands.

Do the files to 'match and rename' have the exact same content but different names?

The contents need not be identical so "Compare" is not a good subject heading! Perhaps "Sync File Names between Folders" is marginally better.

The sequence I have in mind is: open a folder on HDD1, highlight the source files in the folder, select a copy command, open a folder on HDD2, highlight the same number of target files, select a paste command to rename the target files in the folder on HDD2. The names of the files on both HDD's are then the same. A variation is that it can be used to rename files in different folders on the same HDD.

At the moment I have to do this file by file, but it would be a simpler task if it could be done folder by folder. Setting up a text file where a large number of folders and files are involved is error prone, which explains why a copy and paste method would be much appreciated.

It is only the file names that are important.
