Windows 11 Issue?

I have recently updated to Windows 11 from Windows 10 (God knows why!).

Amongst the many issues i've had to work round with this horrible upgrade, is an issue with BRU (latest version). It may be related to the OS because while I was running the most recent version of BRU with no problems before the upgrade, when i saved the most recent version of my config to a new file and loaded it into BRU on my new build, that is when i started having issues.

Basically the entire history of the search/replace config vanishes upon restarting - i have auto save set, and most of the time it behaves; but for some reason when i start up on a new day, and go to manage entries, all thats left is the last used one. it doesn't seem to affect any other setting - JUST search/replace.

Now as I've raised before, I have a LOT of settings in there (450ish at last check), but since the beta release you kindly sent me, that is no longer an issue.

I've just gone into BRU again for the first time today, and the .bru config file has shrunk from around 27-28k to 7k and i've lost all the changes i made yesterday. What i did find is that it seems related to to auto saved/auto loaded profile as i have tried saving a separate config when this has happened and i can load the other without issue....

Is there any update on this issue at all?

Just wondering if anyone else using a large (400+) rename list is seeing these issues and if it's happening on Windows 10 as well as 11?

It seems to have settled down for a couple of uses, but i've gone into BRU again just now and it's lost all the history of the Rename field and the bru profile file has shrunk from 26k to 8k again.

So these settings are stored in a .bru, & not in the Windows Registry?
(For something like this, I guess it must be the .bru.)

Do you mean, Match= & Replace= (in the .bru)?
Or in the [Replacements] section, Replace= / With= ?

And then what actions do you take where it truncates?

I believe it may be something to do with multiple entries within the field - I've just tested now and replicated the issue.

If i leave it on this entry in the program when closing, it works again next time. BUT If I change to use another set of changes (for example to add spaces around a dash) which i do through "Manage Entries" and choose from the existing list - THEN close the program, the file immediately changes to 7kb and i open it back and i only have the fash/space option left:

I'm not sure if the history for the "manage recent entries" is stored elsewhere? As it seems that goign back in straight away, shows me the previous option to select again - when closing the file it goes back to 25kb with the first list. but it seems if i try to use it a day after, the entry vanishes. I'm assuming these are stored elsewhere? I haven't checked the registry, but there's nothing in the "usual" folders!

Color me confused...?
Between .ini's & .bru's, & the Windows Registry...
(IMO, heh, all should be in .ini, with Windows Registry not used at all.)

Anyhow.

It seems, with such a long entry (4,993 bytes, or so)...

The (GUI) F8 does not properly display (or at least what you can see ) the entry.
If displayed F8, you will note that cursor position is at the end of the dialog box (rather then at the beginning).
So that "shows" you that the item is selected, though you cannot see it.

I don't know that the .ini is supposed to contain that [Replacements] section, at all?
(Guessing that any entry in .ini is simply a holdover from earlier times, but does not in fact have any effect.)

It DOES seem that it IS stored in the Window Registry.
As mentioned above, you may or may not necessarily be able to "see" it in the GUI, depending, but it is there.

The last selected entry is what is displayed in the GUI "dialog" box (I think).
So if you change from "4993-chars" to "-", the next time you open BRU, the dialog box will show "-".
4993 is still there, "Manage" will show it. You should be able to select it.


AND, all of that said, *something* causes the Window Registry to "loose" said 4993-chars entry - which should not be happening?


Maybe ? because of Length ?, once you select some other Replace entry, & then Quit, the 4993 entry is discarded?


The dropdown in Replace will NOT show "long" entries.
Long is "long" at least by 1024 chars.
The entry is there, but can only be selected by Manage.

Long is ... good through 4096 chars?
Long, at some point, will be too long, & will DELETE all Long entries from the Windows Registry.
I was "good" with 1024, 2048, 3072, 4096 chars, but then I added a 5001 & while it was there initially, (then what, eh don't recall), but in any case, with that 5001 char entry, & with the 1024+ entries, all those "long" entries ended up being deleted from the Windows Registry.


Unsure what category the (Windows Registry) "Data" column falls under?

This talks about being able to "see" an entry, What's the largest REG_SZ value that Regedit can edit? though that, in BRU, is well about what I can "see" (in Win7).

thanks for the reply - did i mention an ini somewhere? losing my mind

I did of course mean the .bru file - I also thought everything was held there and not the registry; particularly as BRU records a history and i know long strings are not advised in registry keys for speed etc.

Could this perhaps be looked at in the next release? i do know i am an oddball (in more ways than one i'm told lol) with such a large number of entries; but after 1 cull to reduce entries last time until the field was extended in the app; I am struggling to reduce it any more.....

...on the point about it not displayting properly; I must admit i thought it was Win11 being crap again - since i installed it the nVidia drivers don't seem to play nice with my RTX3070, even with studio drivers installed. nice to know thats something it ISN'T to blame for once......!
