4.1.0.1 Portable 64-bit fail

Postby chrisjj » Wed Mar 18, 2026 3:45 pm

Attempting to run this on Windows 7 fails:

Workaround: switch to the 32-bit version.

Any fix?

Hi, this DLL is not part of BRU, it might be part of other software installed on this Windows.

So why is the BRU installer complaining about it?

BRU uses the Windows Explorer API to list files, and also to list drives: if the software in question was an add-on to Windows File Explorer, for instance, that error could be reported by BRU. If you ask Google or other AI engine they might have more details about it.

The error message suggests BRU installer is attempting to install this file. Is it?

No the portable version does not install anything , and that file is not part of BRU anyway.
Here is what ChatGPT suggests

query.dll appears to be a Windows system DLL, not a BRU DLL.
Since this is the portable version, BRU is not installing anything into System32, so it is unlikely that BRU is attempting to install query.dll. More likely, BRU is triggering the error when it calls the normal Windows Shell / Explorer APIs to enumerate files or drives, and that is exposing a problem with the local Windows 7 x64 environment.
The fact that the 32-bit version works but the 64-bit version fails also points in that direction. It suggests there may be a broken, corrupt, or incompatible 64-bit Windows shell/search component or related dependency on that machine, rather than a problem in BRU itself.
So my understanding is:
query.dll is not part of BRU
BRU portable is not installing it
BRU is likely just the application that surfaces an existing Windows 7 x64 shell/search issue
To be certain, the exact text of the error dialog would help, because that would show whether the problem is:
missing DLL
corrupt DLL / bad image
missing dependency
wrong bitness
or a crash inside that DLL

Win7 x64, SP1 here.

And BRU 4.1.0.1 x64 Portable does run on my end.

Query.dll is a Windows System file, is found in C:\Windows\System32,
is dated 10/11/2017 (though date is meaningless), is 2058240 bytes
(though size is potentially meaningless), & has a SHA-256 hash of:

Code: Select all

Thanks. Strange, That file here is 0Kb.

BTW, 64-bit portable fails the same way as 64-bit installed, and neither 32-bit fails.

Assuming there are no serious limitations of the 32-bit version, I'd like to install the 32-bit version ... but the installer .exe is dual and gives me 64-bit with no choice. Any idea how I can install the 32-bit version on this 64-bit Win7 OS?

Hi, using the installer it is not possible to choose which version to install, sorry, it is automatically detected. That DLL file should not be zero KB.

Thanks. So my options are a) repair the file and hope or b) stick with 32-bit portable.

Yes, I would try repair the DLL file as it might affect also other programs.
