Hi.
I've used BRU for years to make simple changes to file names enabling me to sort them consistently. I thought the following problem was to do with the length of the file names, but I've long-since changed the registry to allow me to use long file names. I've put up with having to change these files individually, and I'm sick of it, especially as I currently have a couple of hundred of them.
So, when I raise these files in BRU, it has no problem recognising them. Up they pop, looking all ready for a few simple tweaks - I accept BRU can't do everything I want, and I have to carry out more changes later, but unfortunately, when I try to bulk change them to for example, get rid of the guff in the square brackets, get rid of any full stops or underscoring, change or delete the occasional word I want to get rid of (in the following case, the result is 274 characters with spaces), when I press the lovely big red Rename button, this is what I get:

Is there any way I can overcome this problem? Please!

In addition to that, the program itself must be able to deal with long file names (full file name lengths, including path, actually).

(I'm still on Win7, so "ordinarily" I cannot deal with LFN, so don't hold me to it, but...) I don't believe that BRU can handle full path lengths > 259 characters.


Your file, full path length is 268 characters. (And 268 > 259, hence...)

If that is so, that BRU cannot handle > 259, you'll have to use something else.

(As mentioned in the above link, Everything Search - which can also do [more basic] renaming, is one program that can deal with LFN - even in Win7. And maybe its rename ability can afford enough functionality that you can trim the lengths such that you can then deal further with them in BRU.

Everything can even find path:len:>259 &/or display the Full Path Length, as a column...)
